Credit card bill due Sundays- what are the laws about late charges?
So, I have a card that came up due twice on Sundays. Now, due to holidays and taxes and a big car repair, I’ve been waiting for a paycheck and laving my savings intact, so taht I pay just in time lately- always in full, and always in time. There were many years during which a Sunday due date meant a Monday payment was acceptable.
Apparently, there are still laws in NY that a Monday payment cannot be reported against one’s credit-
but what about late payments?
Is it a scam?
A way to make money?
An extra incentive to pay early?
Or just plain bad business?
The biggest deal is, my statement prints on the 4th, but I didn’t get my statement till the 21st!
With the amount of hooks, yes, the things that read every keystorke, as well as viruses, that we’ve been getting through my boyfriend’s job as well as from home use (through thumb drive)
I refuse to pay bills online.
So, I’m venting, but anyway, I can’t swing a late fee of .00 when I mailed my bill the day after I got it.
And, I’m pissed about the late charges for the Sunday due date being paid Monday.
If I call to complain, will they just cancel me?
And what are the standards in today’s changing economy?
Is there a better card, because Orchard Bank was supposed to be the number 2 top card, and the customer service also stinks! (By that I mean to say that all calls are heavily automated, the people who answer are not American (what else is new?), and the people on the phone are all telemarketers with little interest in helping the customer.)
Thank for all available info!
PS I just called. Now, I wasn’t too happy but I was curt. The guy from India or so was named Hansel, and onme when I told him I got the statement on the 21st, and then asked when it printed.
He started to say nicely enough, "it was printed on the fourth of-"
And then somehow, we were disconnected.
Hmm, wonder how that happened.

I agree with both MadMan and bdancer.
Like bdancer said, send your complaint/problem to them by mail. Create a paper trail in case you need to file complaints with the BBB and the Comptroller of the Currency.
If you must call, then demand to speak to a CSR that is in the U.S., you have that right.

There are no "laws" that cover this. If the due date is a Sunday, it really means that you need to get the money credited to your account by the Friday before. I am surprised that a check mailed on the 22nd did not clear by the 2nd. You should check your bank statement and see when the money was taken out of your account.
You can call to complain and if this is the first time, they might refund the fee. But if this is a regular occurrence, they will not.
And you should get over the worries re paying on line. It really is the best way. You just need to protect yourself better when you download stuff from the internet. But you can normally pay by phone as well. See if your card issuer does this.

Payment is due by the due date. There is no law that allows payment on Monday if the due date is a Sunday.
It is normal for statements to be mailed a couple weeks after the closing date. But you should still have about 2 weeks before the due date. If you are getting the statement a week or less from the due date, you should complain to the credit card company. I suggest you send a letter and forget about the phone.
