How can I ask a family member for help getting a job?

I’m in need of a basic entry level job and I have a cousin who works at a Target.
I was wondering how to approach him and tastefully ask for help getting a job there. I feel bad doing this because I’m asking for a lot, I think. But I need a job very badly because I have bills piling up. However, I’m 18 and have never had a real job before, so it gets complicated there and if my cousin helps he’d be sticking his neck out for me a bit. Help please?

I think it’s totally reasonable to ask for help, but if you get the interview and later on the job, make sure you do well so that you don’t embarass him. People remember who referred whom, and if you don’t do well, they may not take his future referrals as seriously! Hence I never refer anyone!
You may want to start by asking him about his job, what he does, what he likes and doesn’t like. Then tell him that you’re very interested in working there, and you’d like to know what the hiring process is like… and go from there. If you get the interview, make sure you get there early, dress appropriately, know information about the company (where is it headquartered? how long has that store been there? How long has the company been in business? Information about their sales, etc.). Not knowing this makes hiring managers crazy!
If you get the job, make sure you have a good attitude, that you’re on time, that you have strong work ethics. Best wishes.
